Wit & Wisdom Wednesday: In His Skin
Posted by Kate on February 25th, 2009. Filed under: Wit & Wisdom Wednesday. On this Wednesday, I have chosen a quote from one of my favorite books, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. I have read and re-read this book numerous times, and the story has taught me new lessons at different stages in my life. But one lesson the book teaches and I always come back to no matter what age I am is:
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view — until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” –Atticus Finch
Scout and Atticus Finch in the movie To Kill a Mockingbird
Often, we become so wrapped up in our own lives that we cannot separate ourselves from our thoughts and opinions long enough to consider the world from another person’s point of view. We rush to judgment before we can even begin to understand others’ situation. Harper Lee’s words remind us that we should never criticize another as we can’t know what their life holds or what challenges they face.
Many people have read To Kill a Mockingbird as it is a staple in most high school English class curiculums across the United States. But if you haven’t read the book or seen the movie starring Gregory Peck, it’s well worth your time.
