What’s Your Favorite Christmas Carol?
Posted by Kate on December 24th, 2008. Filed under: Musings.Christmas music comes on the radio earlier and earlier each year. This year, I found a 24/7 Christmas music radio station the day after Halloween. Now, I’m all for celebrating the holiday season for as long as possible, but starting the day after Halloween might be pushing it. Of course, now that Christmas is a few hours away, I’ve had the carols playing round the clock today. There are so many that I enjoy, but my personal favorite is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
This song was originally written for the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. In the movie, Judy Garland sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” while comforting her sister on Christmas Eve as they were preparing to move away from their home in St. Louis to New York City.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas; Let your hear be light. From now on, our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas; Make the Yuletide gay. From now on, our troubles will be out of sight.
Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more.
Through the years we all will be together If the Fates allow. Hang a shining star upon the highest bough, And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.
–Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane
I feel this song expresses the true essence of Christmas. Christmas is a time to celebrate our blessings and enjoy the time that we have with our loved ones. We cannot control what has happened to us in the past or what will occur in the future, but we can live in the moment of this Christmas Day to celebrate the birth of Christ and be with those we love. As long as we are with our family and friends, than all is right in the world, if only for one short day.
So, what’s your favorite Christmas song and why does it mean so much to you?
