Getting into the Holiday Spirit
Posted by Kate on December 15th, 2008. Filed under: Musings. When I had finally put the finishing touches on my graduate thesis this past week, I was eager to get into the holiday spirit. For the past six months, I ate, slept and breathed this thesis. So, needless to say, I was eager to move on and the holidays have served as a nice transition period.
Since I was in New York City after finishing my thesis, I took some time to take in the sites and do a little Christmas shopping. New York City always gets me in the holiday mood. Of course, the throngs of tourists make navigating the city quite difficult, but that’s too be expected. From the Rockefeller Christmas tree to the Wollman Ice Skaing Rink in Central Park to Macy’s display windows, the city is filled with Christmas excitement. I think I can appreciate it even more now that I don’t live in the city, which means no more packed subway commutes, 24/7 traffic noise, and dealing with millions of people packed onto one tiny island.

After New York, I headed home to South Jersey where the holiday fun continued. Each year, my mother and I go to the Candlelight Shopping event in Haddonfield, a quaint Norman Rockwell-esque town in Southern New Jersey. Shops on main street in Haddonfield stay open late and locals can stroll sidewalks lined with luminaries while listening to carolers sing Christmas songs.
